Private family committal services will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established as The Sharon Fletcher Memorial Fund.
Sheri was born January 19, 1945, the oldest of two children born to Robert and Jean (Campbell) Kupka. Sheri grew up in Iowa City and attended City High School and St. Katherine’s School in Davenport. Sheri and Gary Wayne Fletcher were married on December 29, 1963, at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church in Iowa City. Together they raised three children, Mick Fletcher, Sarah Fletcher and Maggie Fletcher Wagenknecht all of Iowa City. As a stay at home mother, Sheri would work during the school year as a crossing guard for Horn Elementary where her children attended. Later after her children were grown she started a long career working for her mother Jean Kupka in the University of Iowa Athletic Ticket office until her retirement.
Sheri had a love of sports and spent countless hours watching her children and grandchildren participate in baseball, basketball, football, softball and soccer. She especially enjoyed watching her grandsons Noah and Kyle play football and granddaughter Maya play softball for the West High Trojans. Sheri lovingly traveled many times to Waverly to watch Noah play college football and granddaughter Maddie perform in the dance squad for the Wartburg Knights. Sheri’s other sports favorites were the Iowa Hawkeyes, Denver Broncos and the St. Louis Cardinals.
Sheri showered her grandchildren with love and inspired them to follow their dreams and creative talents. She proudly displayed the art work and photographs done by her granddaughters Maddie, Olivia and Kara.
In 1980 Sheri was presented the Governor’s Life Saving Award by then Governor Robert Ray. In 1979 she was in Boone attending a baseball tournament in which her son Mick was playing. While relaxing by the hotel pool, Sheri saw a child laying on the bottom of the swimming pool. She immediately dove into the pool and pulled the nine-year-old boy from the water. The child was revived and survived due to Sheri’s quick act of bravery.
For Sheri, family was everything. She had such strong unconditional love for her children and grandchildren. She was a very special woman and left an imprint on everyone she touched. Her generosity and her openness of her home was extended to those she loved. Countless friends of her grandchildren considered her grandma. There was no friendship as loyal as Sheri’s.
Sheri is survived by a son, Michael "Mick" Fletcher and wife, Ann and their children, Maddie and Olivia; daughter, Sarah Fletcher and fiancé, David Cahill and Sarah's sons, Noah Fletcher and Kyle Payne; daughter, Maggie Fletcher Wagenknecht and her husband, Scott and their children, Kara and Maya, and special son Cedric Haynes and wife, Machelle and their children Marcus and Trey; brother Chuck Kupka and wife, Jan and Chuck’s children Travis and Alyssa Kupka. Sheri is also survived by many cousins, nieces, nephews, friends and her special black dog, Rondo.
Sheri was preceded in death by her parents, Bob and Jean Kupka; her husband, Gary; in-laws, Vernon and Ruthe Fletcher; brothers-in-law, Steve and Glen Fletcher; and great-uncle Kenneth “Curly” Kupka.
