Mark Samuel Zollo of Coralville, IA died following a short illness on July 31 at the age of 51.

A memorial gathering will be held Sunday, August 26, 2018 from 2:00 – 4:00 pm at The Kirkwood Room, 515 Kirkwood Avenue, Iowa City. A time to share memories of Mark will begin at 3:00 pm. If you have a remembrance of Mark you would like to share or have his family share at his gathering, or to RSVP for the Aug 26 memorial, please email susanzollo58@gmail.com.

Mark is survived by his grieving family: his parents Rick and Susan Zollo, his brother, Dave, his sister in law Beth Oxler, and his beloved nephew, Rocco Zollo, all of Iowa City, IA. Mark was the first grandchild of his paternal grandparents, Richard and Eva Zollo of Beacon Falls, Connecticut and his maternal grandparents, Helen and Payson Re’ of Boston, MA. He was extremely close to his family (grandparents, many aunts, uncles, cousins, grand nieces and nephews) and visited them around the country every chance he got. Mark was preceded in death by both his grandmothers, and by his grandfather, Payson Re’ of Cape Cod, MA.

Mark was born on February 26, 1967 in Boston, Massachusetts. He moved to Iowa with his family when he was 5 years old so his father could attend The Iowa Writers’ Workshop. Mark graduated from Mid Prairie High School in Wellman, IA in 1985 and attended Kirkwood Community College and the University of Iowa. He worked for many years in the restaurant business and many more years as an information technology specialist, most recently at Leepfrog Technologies in Coralville, IA. He will be missed by his many co-workers, colleagues, and clients who had so much respect for his abilities and his willingness to help all who relied on his expertise.

Everyone who knew Mark knew he was an avid sports fan who played football, baseball, and wrestling in high school and joined a local softball league as an adult. He participated in various fantasy sports leagues as he got older and was known among friends for the great brunches he prepared for Hawkeye tailgates. He golfed every chance he got with his best friend, Eric (Lew) Lewis. He bought baseball tickets for his brother Dave, and his nephew, Rocco, so they could travel to Cubs and Cardinals games around the Midwest. Every available Sunday, he took his nephew, Rocco, to Sunday lunch where they would watch baseball on TV. He loved the Yankees and his dream was to attend a baseball game at every stadium in the country. He almost made it.

Every year for the past 20 years, Mark visited his Zollo grandparents on Thanksgiving, so he could prepare them a full turkey dinner. He loved to travel and visit his Zollo family in California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Florida, and Illinois.

He had trips planned to New Mexico and was going to vacation with his parents in Jensen Beach, FL in January, 2019.

Mark was extremely generous with his many friends and family members. We could always count on Mark to help plan family events for the holidays.

As Mark’s parents and family, we are heartbroken to be writing this obituary for Mark. We want so many more chances to tell him how important he’s been to our lives and how much we love him. Mark will forever be loved and missed by his family, his friends, and his extended family. We hope and pray he has found the peace he so deserves.
