Mary Schnoes, 81, died Sunday, July 29th at UIHC following a sudden illness.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12 PM, Saturday, August 4th at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Iowa City. Visitation will be Friday from 4 to 7 PM at Lensing’s Oak Hill, 210 Holiday Rd, Coralville, where a Vigil Service will be recited at 6:30 PM. Graveside Services will be held at 2 PM, Monday, August 6th at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Adel. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the Master Gardener Program, the Friends of the Animal Center Foundation or to the University of Iowa Foundation for the Stead Family Children’s Hospital.

Mary was born January 10, 1937 in Cedar Rapids, Nebraska, the daughter of Leo and Eleanor (Korth) Oswald. She was a graduate of Holy Name High School in Marcus, Iowa. On August 2, 1958 Mary married James Schnoes in Marcus. Mary received her RN degree from St. Mary’s College of Nursing and later received her master’s in nursing from St. Ambrose University. Mary was a registered nurse at UIHC for 47 years. For many years, she was the night house supervisor for the department of nursing.

Mary was a member of St. Mary’s Church and the Sierra Club. She was a Master Gardener, and especially enjoyed gardening and canning for her family. When her children were young she was involved in scouting and teaching catechism. Mary was a pet lover and a pet sitter. Most important to Mary was the love of family, especially her grandchildren.
Mary is survived by her three children, Steve (Tonya) of Woodland Park, Colorado, Mark (Diane) of Coralville and Susan (Kent) Christensen of West Des Moines; six grandchildren, Paul, Stephanie, AJ, Claire, Ashley and Matthew.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and five brothers, Vern, Duane, Gene, Don, and Joe.
