2 April 1896 - West Branch Times

Mathew Cochran, one of the Pioneers of Johnson county, died at his home, Sunday morning, March 22nd. Mr. Cochran's death was a shock to the entire neighborhood, as he had been sick a very short time.

He leaves a family of nine children, four boys and five girls, and a grief stricken wife to mourn his demise. He was 68 years 16 days of age at the time of his death. He was born in Glascoe, Scotland March 6, 1828, and with his parents moved to New York city. After residing there for some time, he, with his parents moved to St. Louis, where he engaged for several months with his brother-in-law Chas. Lake, in the dairy business. Then his parents concluded to move farther west and in 1843 arrived in Johnson Co., Ia, where he had made his home up to the time of his death.

He leaves but one representative of the family who came here with him, Mr. Wm. Cochran, his brother, who has lived to see all of brothers and sisters laid to the grave and also his father and mother in 64 and 66 at a ripe old age.
