Katie had her own problems. When her mother, Susanna, was quite close to delivery time for her, Susanna stepped outside one night after dark and Peter heard her scream. He ran out with a lamp to see, and he saw a large animal jump away from her and disappear. Susanna had big claw marks all over her back and shoulders. They never really knew whether it was a cross dog or a wolf that had attacked her and knocked her to the ground. Before morning, Katie had arrived into the world.

Katie was a short lady, only 4 feet 8 inches tall. She was epileptic, and her mind was strange. She could think and read and write but she didn't comprehend. Her mother taught her to sew and she made beautiful doll clothes for her nieces, Edith and Ruth (Gribbell) Jacob(s), and she made all her own dresses, overcasting the seams, and she made the doll dresses and her own, all by the same pattern. Her mother did an unusual job of bringing her up to make as much of her as she did. Katie never married.
