Death of Peter Alt
Peter Alt was born in Overolaire, Prussia, April 15, 1825 and died at the home of his son, Peter Alt Jr., March 29, 1910, age 84 years, 11 months, 14 days.
Mr. Alt was a graduate of one of the military schools of Germany and did valiant service for his country in the war between Germany and Austria.
He was married to Maria Katherine Zimmers on Psalm Sunday in the year 1856. This union was blessed with six children, one dying in infancy and one growing to young manhood, died at the age of 19.
Shortly after their marriage they moved to Australia where they resided for eleven years when Mrs. Alt died. He then returned to his old home in Germany and nine months afterward he, with his children, his mother and his niece sailed for America, settling in New York for a short time, then decided to go farther west. They arrived in Iowa City and settled on a farm near North Liberty where he resided until about thirteen years ago when he came to make his home with his son Peter and family.
His last illness was very brief, death coming unexpected. He had been at work until about six o'clock in the evening when he complained of not feeling well and by two o'clock the next day, his spirit had taken its flight to the spirit world.
He was a faithful member of the German Lutheran church and on Friday of last week was in his place in the church for the last time.
Three of the sons, Peter, Con and Mart were present. John of Kansas could not come. Fourteen grandchildren, a large circle of friends and neighbors mourn his departure. The Lord Jesus comfort their bereaved hearts and grant unto all a meeting in the world beyond.
Funeral services were held at the Evangelical church Thursday afternoon, conducted by Rev. S. N. Ramige, who preached a very able sermon from the text found in Hebrews 9:27.
