Adelaide A. Svoboda was born Jan. 3, 1919, on a farm north of Amana, Iowa, the daughter of Joe and Tillie (Yearsha) Svoboda. She was united in marriage to Murrell B. Cochran on June 25, 1936, in Humboldt, Iowa. The couple was in the livestock business for many years. Adelaide cooked at several local cafes and the Iowa City Sale Barn for a number of years. In 1969, she and Murrell and their son and daughter-in-law, Bob and Judy Cochran, purchased the Oxford Sale Barn. Adelaide began serving meals on Tuesdays, which eventually turned into six days a week. She was a tremendous cook and enjoyed every minute of feeding countless numbers of patrons over the years before retiring in 1983, but returning to help whenever she was needed! She also enjoyed painting and wallpapering for people in the area.
Her favorite pastime was playing euchre with her brothers in earlier days, and later with her grandsons on the holidays. Adelaide was a people person up to her very last breath — she still came in on Tuesdays to the Sale Barn when possible to visit cafe regulars, greeting them as they came in and as they left. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Oxford, Oxford Super Sixties, and a monthly ladies' card club.
Her family includes her daughter-in-law, Judy Cochran; four grandchildren, Chris Cochran of Daytona Beach, Fla., Chuck Cochran (Tammy) of Oxford, Sandy Doyle (PJ) of Coralville and Tom Cochran (Dawn) of Oxford; six great-grandchildren, Josh Cochran (Caitlin), Kati Burns (Joe), Kelly Cochran, Jacob Cochran, Jessica Doyle and Joe Doyle; four great-great-grandchildren, Lexi, Addi, Kyndall and Kennedy; and a brother, S.J. "Dutch" Svoboda and his wife, Delores, of Sun City, Ariz.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Murrell, in 1999; daughter, Carol, in 1963; son, Bob, in 2003; her parents; a brother, Leon Svoboda; and a sister, Wilma Cole.
A very special thank-you to Dr. Craig Champion, special friend, Eileen Jiras, and many others, too many to mention, who always were willing to help; and all the staff at Lantern Park Care Center for their compassionate care of this, our very special lady!
