Mr. and Mrs. Paul Maske, Louis and Arta Maske, Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Maske, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Kline, Carl and Ella Amelon, attended the funeral of August Zager which was held Sunday at the Sharon E.V. Church.#2
ObituaryAugust Lewis Zager was born in Coslin Prussia, Germany, February 5, 1844 and died near Sharon Center, Iowa, December 12, 1912, aged 68 years, 10 months, and ? days. When a boy of 12 years he emigrated with his parents to America, the family settling in Iowa City, where they remained six years. From Iowa City the family removed to Sharon Township near his late home. The balance of his life was spent at the parental home and at his own home near by.
On September 18, 1870 he was married to Miss Mary Shulthise. This union was blessed with seven children, three sons and four daughters, of who six children preceded him to the spirit world. His wife also died about 28 years ago. In his death he leaves but one child, Nettie M. Zager and a sister, Mrs. Elias Strickler, both of Kalona, Iowa.
Mr. Zager was in his prime, a strong, rugged man possessed of a vigorous constitution. He toiled hard and prospered in things temporal but about seven years ago the hand of physical adversity fell heavily upon him. Through an accident he sustained a broken ankle. Later he was afflicted with disease, and for the last five years he has suffered much. Thrice he underwent the piercings of the surgeons knife.
Though residing in a comfortable home, ministered to in a kindly manner and aided by the most competent physicians money could secure, his strength gradually failed. On Monday night, December 9, he became worse, he grew gradually weaker till on last Wednesday evening December 11, he lost consciousness and passed away on Thursday night December 12. The end was peace.
When a boy Mr. Zager was confirmed in the German Lutheran church. He was converted forty years ago and united with the Evangelical church remaining a member thereof the rest of his life. In those early days he would walk to prayer meeting, sometimes a distance of several miles.
Mr. Zager was truly a great sufferer. His cup of bereavement was full. He followed to the grave his companion and six children. He suffered in body much, very much; perhaps more than any of us knows. But amid his pain and weakness his hope of heaven remained undimmed. His religious experience was clear, and to his pastor he expressed in clear language his faith and his hopes. He has now entered upon his reward. Faith has been exchanged for sight, Hope has found its full fruition, Pain has been forever soothed, Loved ones have again been greeted with a joy no tongue could express. He has met his Saviour and received his crown.
These memorial lines would be incomplete without a reference to the tender ministries of his daughter, Miss Nettie Zager, she cared for her father and ministered to his needs in a most loving, faithful manner. Miss Anna Rhodes, who has resided in the home for 23 years, must also be highly commended.
Now that Mr. Zager is gone the pain of their bereavement will be less for consciousness that they did for the sufferer the best they could. Neighbors also have been very kind, for which the family are sincerely grateful. The funeral was conducted from the Evangelical church at Sharon Center by Rev. A. Schwimley a long time friend of the deceased and his pastor, Rev. J. B. Meloy.
