Loren Otis Schmitt, 72, of Iowa City, passed away Thursday, April 19, 2018 at his home. A funeral service will be held at 11 AM, Friday, April 27, 2018 at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, Iowa City. A visitation will be held from 5-7 PM, Thursday, April 26, 2018 at the funeral home. Burial will be at Nichols Public Cemetery, Nichols, IA. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The National Federation of the Blind or Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

Loren was born on October 17, 1945 in Iowa City, IA, the son of Herbert and Nell (Kelsey) Schmitt. He graduated from The Iowa Braille and Sight Saving School in Vinton. Loren received his B.B.A. from The University of Iowa and his Masters from the University of Illinois. He worked for the Conner Center as an information specialist and before retirement taught braille in Kansas. Loren was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Iowa City Academy of Martial Arts and the National Federation of the Blind.

Loren is survived by his three children, Nick (Melissa) Schmitt of Menan, ID, Virgil (Amanda) Schmitt of Idaho Falls, ID, and Sarah (Dustin) Orgill, Blackfoot, ID; one sister, Genene Moss of Ocean Isle Beach, NC; brother-in-law, Andy (Judy) Wehde of Iowa City; and seven grandchildren; and extended family. He was preceded in death by his sister, Norma and parents.
