Basil R. Hughes, 36, farmer living north of Sharon and about eight miles southwest of Iowa City, was killed about noon Friday in a grove a mile from his farm home by the accidental discharge of his 12-guage shot gun.

The body was discovered by the wife, who went to the grove to look for her husband after he had not come in for dinner. Dr. Frank Love, acting coroner, said Saturday that death was accidental. It was stated that indications were Mr. Hughes had tripped while hunting, the gun exploding as he fell.

The gun exploded near the left side of his head, the shot shattered his skull. Officers in Iowa City were notified, and Deputy Sheriff Preston Koser and Fire Chief Herman Amish, assisted by farmers, brought the body to the home.

Mr. Hughes was born on a farm in Sharon township June 14, 1897. He was married September 28, 1921, to Miss Sidsel Skriver of West Branch. He resided in this vicinity all of his life.

Surviving besides the widow are two daughters, Doris, 10, and Anna, 6. His father, Luke Hughes, resides in Iowa City. Four sisters, and one brother also survive.
