Joan Smith, 87, of Iowa City, died Sunday, April 8, 2018 at Windmill Manor in Coralville.

Her family will greet friends Friday from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service in Iowa City.

Private inurnment of cremains will be in Memory Gardens Mausoleum in Iowa City.

In lieu of flowers and plants, memorials may be directed to The Salvation Army.

Born August 5, 1930 in Mt. Vernon, Iowa, the daughter of Nicholas and Iris (Caraway) Peet, Joan grew up in Mt. Vernon and moved to Iowa City in 1940. She graduated from Iowa City High School in 1948.

She married Harold E. Smith in June of 1949. The couple later divorced.

Joan first worked as a lab tech at the Oakdale Campus and later as a secretary at University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics and Trinity Episcopal Church. She also worked at UIHC in pediatrics– retiring in 1991.

Survivors include her son Dean Smith (Mary Estle Smith) of Iowa City; granddaughters, Jessica Hotz (Michael) and Amy Smith; and a longtime friend, Betty Raher of Cedar Rapids, who was just like a sister, and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother and sister in law, Nick and Merna Peet.
