OBITUARY
Henry A. Ressler

Henry Albert Ressler, so of John Jacob and Fanny Miller Ressler, was born on a farm in Sharon Township, Johnson County, Iowa, on July 2, 1873, and departed this life April 23, 1963, at Shenk's Nursing Home in Wellman, Iowa.
He received his education in the nearby district school known as Willow Grove or the Ressler School. Except for such times as he spent working for neighbors or in traveling in the West, he remained on the farm which his father had acquired by original purchase from the United States Government in the late "forties" and early "fifties" of the past century.
As his brothers and sisters married and left the parental roof, Henry and his two unmarried sisters, Emma and Laura, remained to manage the farm and to care for their aging parents. After the death of their parents, the three of them purchased the farm. In 1911 they opened their home to their widowed brother, Charles, and his five children where Charles remained until the time of his death in 1929. The children, Paul Jackson (Charles's step-son), John J., Alice F.(now Mrs. L.A. Winborn), Theodore C. and Howard L., came to regard their uncle and aunts as second parents and remained with them until they grew up and established their own homes.
When sister Emma married Wm. Hesselschwerdt of Kalona, Henry and Laura operated the farm as a partnership. In 1938 they sold the farm to their nephew, Harold Ressler, and moved to a house in Sharon Center. During this time Henry continued an active and useful life working for various relatives and neighbor's in his community.
In March, 1952, Henry was stricken by a paralytic stroke which rendered him incapable of further work. In 1953 he and his sister Laura were taken to Brown's Nursing Home in Wellman. Here Laura passed away soon after. Henry remained until 1957, at which time he was removed to Shank's Nursing Home where he remained until the time of his death.
Henry was for many years a faithful member and attendant at the Sharon EUB Church. During the years of confinement he greatly appreciated the concern of the various ministers and members who made regular calls at the Nursing Home. He was a 50 year Mason, his entire membership having been with Fellowship Lodge #549 at Sharon Center.
Mr. Ressler was preceded in death by both his parents, two brothers and eight sisters. Surviving him are one sister, Mrs. Cora R. Smith of Iowa City and one brother, Edwin J. Ressler of Otis Orchards, Washington. Numerous nieces and nephews of four generations knew him literally as "Uncle Henry", and many of his friends and other relatives addressed him by that title as a term of friendship and respect. His many friends and relatives will long remember him as one responsive to the call of duty and strong in the conviction that he best serve God who serves his fellow-man.
