Florence I. Bontrager Maas

Florence I. Bontrager Maas of Atrium Village, Hills, Iowa passed away on Monday, February 3, 2003.
Florence was born in Johnson County, rural Kalona, the daughter of David E. and Maggie Kempf Bontrager. She attended rural Johnson County grade school and graduated from Kalona High School. She received a teachers certificate from Coe College, Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Reverend O. E. McBride married Florence and Meredith J. Maas in Wapello, Iowa, August 25, 1926. The couple shared 64 years of marriage. They were general farmers and raised Registered Aberdeen Angus cattle. They retired to Atrium Village in March of 1986.
Florence was a member of First United Methodist Church, Iowa City, a Past Matron, Past Grand Representative, and a 50-year member of Corona Chapter, Order of Eastern Star, Sharon Center, and a 50-year member of White Shrine of Jerusalem, Iowa City.
Florence will be remembered with love by the many whose lives she touched with her wonderful, understanding and kind manner. She was a beautiful lady.
Surviving Florence are a son, Donald Maas of Nichols, a daughter, Rita Howe of rural Riverside, and a daughter-in-law, Donna Maas of rural Iowa City. Also surviving are 10 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, one great-great granddaughter, and one sister, Lois Swartzendruber of Colorado Springs, CO. Numerous nieces and nephews and cousins also survive.
Florence was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Meredith J., December 31, 1990, son, Meredith Jr., February 2, 1987, two sisters, Gladys Hostetler, Nadine Hershberger, and four brothers, Ray, Russell, Lloyd and Cecil Bontrager.
A memorial fund has been established in Florence's memory for First United Methodist Church, Corona Chapter OES, or Atrium Village.

The family wishes to thank everyone who has been supportive of them during this time of their loss. Your many acts of kindness with be remembered always.
