Helen Arlene (Zahs) Harden, 74, of Kalona died Friday, February 18, 2000, in Mercy Hospital, Iowa City, following a lengthy illness.
Services were Sunday, February 20, in Peterseim Funeral Home, Kalona, with the Reverends Doug Cue and David L. Yoder officiating. Burial was in Sharon Hill Cemetery, Kalona.
Born July 14, 1925, in rural Riverside, Washington County, she was the daughter of William and Easter Lily (Fountain) Zahs.
She attended Middleburg School and graduated from Kalona High School and Parsons College, Fairfield.
Mrs. Harden taught in a rural school for one-year and worked for Bell Telephone in Iowa City and later in Colorado, until her retirement in 1979.
She was a member of Sharon Center United Methodist Church.
Helen Zahs was united in marriage to Louis Harden in her home in Kalona June 19, 1965. The couple lived in Kalona until moving to Colorado in 1976. They returned to the Kalona area in 1981.
Survivors include one brother and sister-in-law, Dean and Elaine Zahs of Ainsworth; one sister-in-law, Gladys Zahs of Riverside; seven nieces and nephews, Michael Zahs of Riverside, Donald Zahs of Ainsworth, Mary Marek of Kalona, Patricia Zahs of Riverside, Kathryn Keil of Sabula, Carolyn Dohrmann of DeWitt, and Robert Zahs of Riverside; and 16 great nieces and great nephews.
Mrs. Harden was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Louis in 1992; her brother George Zahs in 1984; an infant brother Leslie Glen in 1918; and a great niece, Kolynn Keil in 1984.
A general memorial fund has been established.
Peterseim Funeral Service, Kalona, in charge of arrangements.
