R. Gene Meer, 80
R. Gene Meer, 80, a resident of Riverside, Iowa died on Tuesday, April 18, 2006 at Genesis Medical Center, West Campus in Davenport, Iowa.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, April 21, 2006 at the McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Chapel, Bettendorf. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home. Graveside services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, April 22, 2006 at Memory Gardens Cemetery, Iowa City, Iowa. Contributions in his memory may be made to the American Diabetes Association of to Camp Courageous, P.O. Box 418, Monticello, Iowa 52310-0418.
He was born August 8, 1925 in Sharon Center, Iowa, the son of Fred & Mabel (Weeber) Meer. On October 21, 1949, he was untied in marriage to L. Regina "Jean" Breese in Iowa City. Gene retired as a superintendent for the City of Bettendorf Parks & Recreation Department where he had been a faithful employee for many years.
In earlier years, he was a trooper with the Iowa State Police in the Ft. Madison, Iowa area. He also earned a private pilot's license.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Sitkin and was honorably discharged in 1946.
Those left to honor his memory include his beloved wife, Jean; his daughter & son-in-law, Jamie & Lonnie Logan of Bettendorf; his grandchildren, Amy Mason & her husband, John and Cory Logan, all of Bettendorf; his great-grandchildren, Austin, Cassidy & Madison Mason; his sister & brother-in-law, Ida M. & Jesse Grout of Kalona, Iowa; his brother and sister-in-law, Robert & Jeanne Meer of Waukesha, Wisconsin; and numberous nieces and nephews.
Gene was preceded in death by his sisters, Ethel & Ada, his brothers, Ralph, Clarke & Roy; and by his parents.
