Paul H. Scott Biography

Paul Herbert Scott, age 75, died at home on August 16, 2004, following a long illness. His body has been donated to the University of Iowa for research.
Paul was born on September 12, 1928, in Saint Claire Shores, Michigan, to Warren and Verla Scott. He spent two years in the Marine Corps after high school, and then attended Taylor University in Indiana, graduating in 1953, with a double major in Speech and Business. He married Winifred Nell Murray on June 1, 1951. He taught school one year in Indiana, at which time he determined that was not his calling. He began a career with Procter & Gamble in 1954 and worked for the company until his retirement in 1988, at which time he was Personnel Manager at the Iowa City Plant.
Paul enjoyed football, golfing, fishing, boating, woodworking and ice cream. He collected antique clocks for several years, and spent endless hours on his driveway and in his garage restoring antiques. Through it all, he sang and told jokes. He loved his 1970 Cutlass convertible, which he drove around town for errands and trips to the golf course. He was instrumental in starting the Iowa City Bible Fellowship where he served as an elder for many years. In 1981, he helped start Hillside Christina School, which continues to operate today. He loved people, and always had time for neighbors, college students, friends, and family. But most of all, Paul loved Jesus Christ who gave him his reason for living.
Approximately seven years ago, Paul started having some speech and motor skills difficulties. He went through many tests, and eventually was diagnosed with Cortical Basal Ganglion Degeneration (CBGD), which is a rare neurological disorder for which there is no cure and no treatment. He went through quite a challenging life transformation and lost his ability to speak, write and walk. His mind continued to work well, and he could be counted on to laugh at jokes and funny stories all the way to the end. Freddie was able to care for him at home throughout the whole process, which was a real answer to prayer; that he would not have to be moved to a care facility.
Until the Spring of 2002, he and Freddie had the wonderful opportunity to travel to several places, including Hawaii, Alaska, Germany, England, California, Arizona, Nova Scotia, Victoria Island/Vancouver, Florida, and many closer states. He was also a volunteer teacher at Hillside Christian School, and remained active with church until his illness advanced.
Paul is survived by his wife; and four daughters, Christine Scott of Zion, Illinois; Suzanne (Doug) Oelschlaeger of Cedar Rapids; and Paula (Bill) Lynch and Becky (Kevin) Hasler, of Iowa City. He is also surevived by 8 grandchildren; David (20) and Rachel (18) Lynch; Noelle (19) Scott; Mattie (19), Charlotte (16) and Will (13) Oelschlaeger; and Griffen (12) and Mitchell (9) Hasler. He is survived by one brother Richard Scott and family of Plymouth, MI and a sister, Jean Kargenian and family of Grosse Ile, MI. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and two grandchildren.
The family extends a huge thanks to Iowa City Hospice for all their care and support. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be sent to Iowa City Hospice or to Hillside Christian School, 1250 12th Avenue, Coralville, IA 52241.
