Marlys G. Breese, 97, of Iowa City, passed away Saturday, March 3, 2018 at Briarwood Health Care Center. A private graveside service is planned at Memory Gardens Cemetery, Iowa City. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church or residents of Briarwood HealthCare Center.

Marlys was born on July 26, 1920 in Fort Dodge, IA, the daughter of Holden Thomas and Clara (Elefson) Gillespie. She was united in marriage to Edwin E. Breese on December 2, 1938; he preceded her in death on February 4, 1991. Marlys was an office worker for The Breese Company for 37 years before retiring in 1989. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Iowa City.

Marlys is survived by her son Tom (Holly) Breese of Iowa City; two grandchildren, Eric Breese (Mark Stolt) of Chicago, IL and Chad Breese of Ashburn, VA; and two great-grandchildren, Stener and Braiclyn Breese.

Marlys will be greatly missed by her family.

She was preceded in death by her husband Edwin Breese; son, Stuart Breese; and sister, Dorothy Vincent.

The family would like to thank Briarwood for their excellent care of Marlys over the last few years.
