Shelva Jean Hasler, 78, of Iowa City died Saturday, Feb. 10, at Mercy Hospice Care after a brief illness.

Jean will be remembered fondly for her love of family, her faith in Christ, her positive attitude and cheerful optimism, her boundless energy, her sense of humor, her impeccable sense of style, and her generosity to others.

She enjoyed traveling and visited Europe and other locations around the world numerous times in the company of her husband, children, grandchildren, and friends. She had a deep appreciation for art, history, and tradition, and she believed in the beauty of music to lift hearts and spirits. Jean loved to cook and enjoyed hosting family gatherings on holidays, birthdays, and other special occasions. She truly delighted in bringing people together and found joy in being the ever-present “Nanna” to her grandchildren.

In addition to being a mother and homemaker, Jean held a variety of jobs and careers throughout her life, including teaching at the University of Iowa Dept. of Home Economics. She also was an experienced dealer/seller of antiques and vintage apparel at weekend markets throughout the Midwest, including the Iowa City Kiwanis Club market. Over the past several years and until just recently, Jean had served as a substitute teacher for the Iowa City and Williamsburg school districts. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Iowa City.

Jean’s surviving family includes her seven children, as well as 17 grandchildren, and her four siblings.

Jean will be interred at a future date at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, VA, where Irving was laid to rest. Memorial donations may be made to the Iowa Lions Eye Bank: https://www.iowalionseyebank.org/About/Contribute .
