Marcia K. Mundy, 70, of Iowa City, died Saturday at Atrium Village in Hills, Iowa.

Born July 14, 1947 in Iowa City, Iowa, Marcia was the daughter of Cleo & Leona (Kurtz) Kron and the third of six children. Marcia graduated co-valedictorian of Regina High School 1965. She attended the University of Iowa where she was active on campus as part of Delta Zeta Sorority, Phi Beta Kappa, Mortar Board, Angel Flight, and other organizations, and was honored as “Co-Ed of the Year” 1968. Marcia graduated with highest honors from Iowa in 1969. She would later obtain a Master of Arts from the University of Iowa in 1981.

Marcia was a world traveler and lived in Kuwait, Vietnam, and Germany after college. She returned to Iowa shortly after the birth of her first child, Ethan. Throughout her life, Marcia cherished learning and sought to share the opportunities of education with others. She worked as an educator for the Iowa City School District and Grant Wood AEA for 25 years with a focus on developing and expanding special education programs across eastern Iowa. She was an active member of her local Catholic church, a social cooking club, and various other organizations.

Marcia enjoyed lively competition, both physical and mental, and took particular delight in besting her siblings in such activities whenever possible. Marcia liked strong coffee, spirited conversation, a good book, a good game of Scrabble, and listening to NPR on her way to and from her many activities. She was always cheering on the Hawkeyes, including the football and women’s basketball teams for whom she was a season ticket holder.

Marcia was a devoted mother, sister, aunt, and friend and derived pleasure from the accomplishments of others as well as her own. She had a deep compassion for humans and animals and always tried to find and make the best of any situation. She was a light in the lives she touched and will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Marcia is survived by her son Ethan Mundy (Nancy Kim) of Richmond, Virginia; daughter, Alicia (Hans) Hoerschelman of Iowa City; a grandson, August, and another expected soon, both of Iowa City; her siblings Jeanne (John) Berndt of Cary North Carolina, Patricia (William) Boettger of Danville, California,
Ted (Kathy) Kron of Iowa City, Carole Kron (Otto Sohn) of Iowa City and
Julie (John Bruntz) of West Des Moines; 12 beloved nieces and nephews, and 9 grandnieces and nephews.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated Saturday, January 20th at 9:00 am at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Iowa City.

The family will greet friends and host a reception following her burial from 11:30 to 1:30 pm in St. Mary’s parish hall.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in Marcia’s honor may be directed to St. Anthony’s Bread at St. Mary’s Church or the Southern Poverty Law Center.

Marcia was preceded in death by her parents.
