Ted was born in Ottawa, Illinois on September 9, 1941 to Walter and Dorothy (Zeller) Halm. He grew up in Ottawa and graduated from Marquette High School. He received his bachelor’s degree from St. Ambrose University, his master’s degree and Educational Specialist degree, both from The University of Iowa. Ted married Barbara Novotny in Iowa City on August 22, 1964. Ted and Barb moved to Iowa City in 1967.

Ted valued his free time, especially if it were spent in the outdoors, doing what he loved most; spending time with his family, golfing, fishing, camping, hunting, bowling, educating, cheering on the Iowa Hawkeyes and most of all, biking. He participated in many Ragbrais’. In 1995, Ted and Barb took an adventure of a lifetime together and rode in the Iowa 150 ride across the United States.

He worked for the Iowa City Community School District for 36 years working with Elementary Students as a guidance counselor and for Junior High Students as an assistant principal. Prior to his retirement in 1999, Ted served as the Principal of the alternative high school.
Ted was an avid Hawkeye’s football and wrestling fan and had many good times while attending these events. He cherished his family and was so very proud of his grandchildren. He will be missed by many.

Ted is survived by his wife Barb; children, Becky (Dan) Briese of River Falls, WI, Brenda (Dave) McVay of Bainbridge Island, Washington, and Brian (Wendy) Halm of Wauwatosa, Wisconsin; sister Mary Lou (Jim) Vandevender of Cedar Rapids; sister-in-law Mary Ann Halm of Cedar Rapids and 6 grandchildren, Jackie and Nathan McVay, Jack and Eddy Halm and Jane and Lars Briese.

Ted was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Peter.
