Elmer L. Potter, age 88, of 106 Paddock Circle, Iowa City died Friday January 28, 2005 at his home due to a lengthy illness.

Funeral Services will be held 10:30 am Tuesday at the First Christian Church in Coralville with Dr. John McKinstry officiating. Burial will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 pm Monday at the Gay and Ciha Funeral Service in Iowa City and 9 am Tuesday at the First Christian Church until service time. Memorials may be sent in Elmer's name to Iowa City Hospice or the First Christian Church. Condolences may be sent to Elmer's family through our website at www.gayandciha.com

Elmer was born July 30, 1916 to Lorin and Frances Potter in the Scott Township of Rural Johnson County. He attended country school near North Liberty and one year of high school at Cosgrove. He married Ruth Olson on June 19, 1937 at First Christian Church in Iowa City. In 1938 he and Ruth moved to Waterloo, Iowa where Elmer was employed by a company that provided material for the construction of various military bases and instillations across Iowa and Nebraska. Elmer was best known for the 37 years of employment with Sears as a service manager until his retirement in 1982.

Elmer was past member of the Eagles and Isaac Walton League. Since 1948 he and Ruth have enjoyed spending summers in Colorado. He also enjoyed pheasant hunting and playing cards

His family includes Sons and their wives; Jerry and Jane of Canton, OH, Daniel and Becky of Shorewood, IL and Jeff of North Liberty. Daughter-in-Law; Jan Potter of Leawood, KS. Sisters; Alice and Harold Brown of Ionia, MO Florence Gardner of Salida, CO as well as nine grand children, nine great-grand children and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Elmer was preceded in death by his parents, brothers; Lewis and George and son Michael.
