Irene W. Einspahr, 95, of Iowa City, died peacefully on Tuesday, December 26, 2017, at Crestview Nursing & Rehab Center in West Branch, Iowa.
Born January 20, 1922, in Wellsburg, North Dakota, Irene was the daughter of Joseph and Ella (Hanson) Williams, with older siblings Wilma (Klososky) and Robert. The family moved to Harvey, North Dakota during the Great Depression, where Irene graduated from Harvey High School in 1939. After graduating from Duluth Business College, Irene worked as a bookkeeper for The Store Without A Name in Fargo. During WWII Irene moved to the West Coast to be with her sister, and while working for the Tacoma Labor Advocate newspaper, she met Lt. John Einspahr, who was stationed at Fort Lewis, Washington. On September 6, 1945, Irene and John were married at the Fort Lewis Main Post Chapel and remained so until John’s passing in 2010.
Irene and John settled in the Minneapolis area and raised their three children, Mary, Fred, and Ann in Deephaven near Lake Minnetonka. The family was very engaged in their close-knit community and in their church. Irene and her family were also avid gardeners, raising a variety of vegetables, fruits, and flowers; their freezer and cupboards were full each autumn with their backyard harvest. Irene was devoted to her family, including the four-legged as well as the two-legged members. She was a woman of strong faith and with her family, were among the founding and longest serving members of Grace Lutheran Church in Deephaven. Irene was active in all facets of church life, as well as operating and teaching nursery school at the church with her friend, Betty LeDell.
Irene led a life of compassion, goodness, and faith. Her loving and generous spirit extended to all she encountered throughout her life. She will be missed by her surviving children, Fred Einspahr (Susan) of Kalamazoo, MI, and Ann Parent (Rick) of Warren, ME, as well as seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Irene joins those who have gone before, including her parents, her husband, John, her daughter, Mary Waters, and her siblings.
Visitation will be held at 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 2, at Bethany Lutheran Church in West Branch, IA followed by a funeral service at 9:00 a.m. Graveside committal services will be 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday at Odebolt Cemetery in Odebolt, Iowa. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Multiple Sclerosis Society.
