Phyllis Faxon Huelsbeck passed away December 7, 2017 at Oaknoll Retirement Community in Iowa City Iowa after a long period of declining health.

Phyllis was born on Oct 21, 1922 in St. Louis, Missouri to the late Ralph and Prue Baker Faxon. She grew up in Denver, CO and graduated from Colorado State University with a degree in home economics. As a young woman Phyllis set aside her Home Ec training to pursue a career in retail, working at I.Magnin in San Francisco and Younkers in Des Moines, but after her marriage to Paul Huelsbeck in 1946, she became a classroom teacher. Paul and Phyllis had 5 children and Phyllis was a busy stay at home mom while they were young. She loved cooking, gardening, and all manner of creative projects. Most of all, she loved babies. Her children have fond memories of her planning backyard birthday parties or stitching the coordinating headband for a newly crafted Easter dress on the way out the door to Mass. Phyllis was also a girl scout leader for many years and excelled in providing arts and crafts and organizing camping trips.

Paul and Phyllis were members of Holy Trinity Catholic Church during most of their lives in Des Moines. Paul died in 1996 and several years later Phyllis moved to Oaknoll retirement residence in Iowa City, IA where she received wonderful care. Her family wishes to thank all of her devoted caregivers there for being her real family during the long course of her dementia.

Phyllis’ daughter Ann preceded her in death. She is survived by two sons, Mark(Barbara) and David (Jean) Huelsbeck, and two daughters, Martha Huelsbeck (Christopher Bavolack) and Mary (Gerald) Sibrack. She is also survived by 7 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. A Funeral Mass will be held on January 13 at 10:30 am at Holy Trinity Catholic Church,2926 Beaver Ave, Des Moines, Iowa, preceded by visitation from 9:30 to 10:30. Memorial contributions may be made to the Oaknoll Retirement Community employee fund, Holy Trinity Church, Mercy Children’s Hospital (Des Moines) or the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America.
