Marie Hinz, 83, of Iowa City, Iowa, passed away November 7, 2017 at Oaknoll Retirement Residence in Iowa City.

Services are tentatively being planned for early December and will be announced when the dates are determined.

Marie was born May 22, 1934 in Vail, Iowa, to Theodore & Alice (Brockelsby) Hawley. She graduated from Vail High with honors in 1952. After graduation, she attended Iowa State University for two years and received her BA degree in teaching from Drake University in 1962. In 1982, she received her Master of Art degree from Marycrest College in Davenport. Marie taught school in Vail, Story City, Cedar Rapids (Arthur School), Roosevelt in Iowa City, Mediapolis and Clear Creek Amana, for a total of 29 years. Marie also tutored for The University of Iowa Athletics for five years, but her passion was educating children with learning disabilities. Marie believed that all students had the right to reach their potential regardless of their abilities and resources, and she was dedicated to creating an environment for her students to succeed. During almost three decades of teaching, countless young people benefitted from her skilled nurturing and guidance.

Marie married Gordon Hinz on August 22, 1954 at First Presbyterian Church in Vail, Iowa and the couple enjoyed 63 years together. After marriage, she and Gordon farmed in the Denison area for seven years, before moving to Ames, Iowa in 1961, where Gordon attended Iowa State University. In 1970, they moved to Mediapolis, Iowa and in 1981, Marie & Gordon settled at 2119 Leonard Circle – where they made their home for the next 35 years. Marie and Gordon spent winters of the latter 15 years in Arizona and had the opportunity to travel throughout the country, especially to visit their grandchildren and abroad. In 2015, they moved to their current residence at Oaknoll in Iowa City.

Marie was an exemplary competitor beginning with her days as a star on the girls 6 on 6 basketball team at Vail High School. The competitiveness extended to the card table and golf course. Many a friend hoped she was in their foursome, as she could be counted on for the winning hand or stroke and a good laugh. She delighted in her family and friends and spent countless hours entertaining in her and Gordon’s love-filled home. If she wasn’t cooking, she was gardening, sewing, crafting or volunteering. Each year, her boys’ families looked forward to her homemade Christmas decoration ranging from a sock snowman to a pair of elf shoes. She was a member of St. Andrew Presbyterian Church for 35 years, where she taught Sunday school and served as deacon and elder. She also was active in KZ PEO Chapter and TTT. Above all, Marie made sure that each of her five grandchildren knew that he or she was the apple of her eye. You could always count on Gram for a warm hug, a clever quip, and a full cookie jar.
Diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease 16 years ago, Marie fought with her usual high-spirited determination, positivity and humor.

Marie is survived by husband Gordon; three sons: Scott (Mallory) of Wellman, Iowa, Mark (Larissa) of Harlan, Iowa, and Brent (Tami) of Westerville, Ohio; sister Gladys (Dean) Morford of Arizona, brother Ted (Jeanne) Hawley of Vail, IA, five grandchildren: Caitlin of Des Moines, Iowa, Allyson and Kylee, both of Harlan, Iowa and Jakob and Madelyn, both of Westerville, Ohio; and a sister-in-law Norma Hawley of Denison, IA.

Marie was preceded in death by her parents and her brother Bob.
