OBITUARY: GONE TO REST.....Carr Hartman died at his home near Iowa City April 28, at the advanced age 67 years, 7 months and 16 days. He was born in Columbia Co., Penn, Sept. 12th, 1816. From there he went to Ohio in 1840 and married Elizabeth Kepler in 1844, and the same year was converted and joined the old school Lutheran church. Soon he emigrated to Johnson county, Iowa. He was one of the four that organized the first class in that part of the state, and Mr. Hartman was chosen as their class leader, a position which he held for a great many years. He had his season of rejoicing as well as sorrow. In 1848 he lost his companion who left him with two small children--a boy and girl--to mourn her loss, the son Albert Hartman--resides at Spaulding and the daughter is Mrs. H. Kloss of this city. One year after his first wife's death, he married again to Mrs. Susan Bouton by whom he had seven children; two of them--a boy and girl--are at home, two died years ago; the other three are living near their old home. He had the blessed satisfaction of seeing all his children converted and members of the church. On Sunday morning, the day before his death, he led in family devotion as was his custom always when able to do so, which he did for the last time. He selected for the lesson the 34th Psalm and led in prayer; he took worse that afternoon and on Monday April 28, at 12:30 PM he quietly fell asleep, for he had that strong faith in the blessed Master that all would be well. he said, "I am ready to go; 'Not my will but thine, oh Lord, be done--blessed are they that died in the Lord." The funeral services were conducted by the Rev. Elder Powers of the M. E. church of Muscatine. His text was 2nd Samuel XIV:14. Thus ends the life of a valient soldier of the cross, a faithful christian, a true devoted husband, a kind affectionate father and a friend to all who knew him.
