John Richard Pratt, 81, of Coralville, died October 27, 2017 at Mercy Hospital, Iowa City after an extended illness. The Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, November 1, at Lensing’s Oak Hill. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, October 31, 2017, from 5 to 7 PM at the Funeral Home. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery, Iowa City, with Military Honors performed by the Coralville American Legion.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Paws and More Animal Shelter, 1004 W. Madison St., Washington, Iowa, 52353.
John was born February 2, 1936, to Richard and Lena Pratt in Washington, Iowa. He was a graduate of Washington High School. He proudly served in the U.S. Marine Corps and graduated from the University of Iowa with a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science. John married Nancy Carlson in Peoria, Illinois. They had two children, John and Jennifer.
John thrived as a salesman, starting his career with Corn Products Company where he worked for his future father-in-law. John spent the rest of his career excelling in medical sales, earning “Million Dollar Club” awards at American Hospital Supply (now Baxter) year after year. He was relentlessly dedicated to his customers, and he was particularly proud of converting the University of Iowa Hospitals from an autoclave system to disposable products, reducing patients’ risk of infection.
After retirement, he opened an antique store in Moline, Illinois and later another shop in Aledo, Illinois. He loved antiques, and antique marbles in particular. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, and enjoyed annual fishing trips to Northern Minnesota with his family and friends. He followed every sport and was especially fond of the Iowa Hawkeyes, Chicago Cubs, and Chicago Bears. He was a proud member of the Golden Hawks I-Club and Presidents Club for many years and attended countless Iowa football and basketball games. John enjoyed spending time with his family and pets. He was an animal lover and dearly loved every dog he ever had.
John is survived by his wife, Nancy; children, John (Diana) Pratt of Walker, MN, and Jennifer (Thomas) McNamara of Grand Rapids, MI; two grandchildren, Blake Pratt and Brandon (Jennifer) Pratt; and four great-grandchildren. He is also survived by three sisters, Catherine Cordova of Tucson, AZ; Margarette (Steve) Johnson of Davenport, IA; Carolyn Moyer of Bloomington, IL; and a niece and nephews.
Online condolences may be left for the family at www.lensingfuneral.com.
