Marguerite Dolores Harney, 87, of Iowa City, passed away Friday, October 13, 2017 at The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 AM, Wednesday, October 18, 2017 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Iowa City. Visitation will be held from 4-7 PM Tuesday, October 17, 2017 at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, Iowa City with a Vigil at 7 PM. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Iowa City.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The University of Iowa Foundation: Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center, St. Mary’s Catholic Church or The Bird House, Hospice Home of Johnson County.

Marguerite was born on March 6, 1930 in Oxford, IA, the daughter of John Leo and Barbara Lillian (Lala) Dostal. After graduating as valedictorian from Oxford High School, Marguerite moved to Iowa City and worked at the Johnson County Courthouse Treasurer’s Office. She was united in marriage to Vincent Harney on April 18, 1950 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Iowa City. While raising their children, Marguerite provided in-home day care and then worked for 26 years in the Iowa City Community School District, the last 19 of those years as a library media secretary at Horace Mann Elementary. She was a Girl Scout Leader, Cub Scout Den Mother, and Boy Scout Board Member. After retirement, Marguerite volunteered at the Iowa City Police Department Records Division for more than a decade. She was an avid reader, enjoying hundreds of books during the last several years of her life.

Marguerite is survived by five children, Victoria Phillips (Mike) of Plainview, TX, Michael Harney (Marsha) of Iowa City, Joyce Carroll (Steve) of Iowa City, Janet Harney (Edward Broyles) of Alexandria, VA, Lawrence Harney of Iowa City, and daughter-in-law, Soni Harney of Iowa City. Marguerite is also survived by her two sisters, Phyllis Terrell of University Heights and Dolores Buchanan of Toms River, NJ; 7 grandchildren, Shane Harney (Kris), Stacey Driscoll (Cameron), Travis Harney (Krista), Nathan Carroll (Erin Groff), Larissa Carroll (Ray Moore), Brock Harney (Heather), Drew Harney (Sarah); and 11 great-grandchildren, Maddison Arnold, Lane Bear, Kayla Moore, Adilyn Driscoll, Kaylee Harney, Madason Bear, Myles Harney, Chloe Driscoll, Gavin Harney, Kinnick Carroll, Nora Harney, another on the way, and many nieces and nephews.

Marguerite was preceded in death by her husband Vincent, son Philip, and brother Vernon.
