Cletus W. Keating, 78, of Iowa City, passed away at Legacy Gardens in Iowa City on Sunday, August 6, 2017 following a long illness.

A Funeral Mass will be held Wednesday at 10:00 am at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Iowa City. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery in Iowa City. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Lensing Funeral Service in Iowa City. A parish rosary will begin at 7:00 pm.

Instead of flowers and plants, memorials may be directed to St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, the Regina Foundation or the Iowa City Police Association.

Cletus was born April 25, 1939 in Iowa City, Iowa, the son of Peter and Loretta (Rogers) Keating. He graduated from St. Patrick’s High School in 1957 and attended Kirkwood Community College. He later graduated from the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy at Camp Dodge, Iowa.

Cletus married Judy Ditch on October 6, 1967 in Iowa City. He was a police officer with the Iowa City Police Department for 28 years – retiring as Sgt. During his tenure, he received further training at the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia.

He served in the United States Army in Germany from 1964 – 1965

Survivors include his daughter Shelly Keating Conlon (P.J.) of Iowa City;
grandchildren, Mackenzie “Mac” Conlon, Michael Conlon and Claire Conlon;
sisters, Mary Melton and Eileen Foughty, both of Iowa City; a sister in law, Maggie Keating of Iowa City and many nieces and nephews.

Cletus was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Judy, an infant daughter Erin, a brother Robert Keating, sisters, Dorothy King and Bernice Lynch and a sister and her husband, Genevieve and Karl Kuhlman.
