Larry Stoner Cool, age 74 of Gila Bend, Arizona, rode out on a tornado during a severe thunderstorm on Friday, July 21, 2017 under the watchful care of his daughters in Tiffin, Iowa. Larry was born to the late Lyndon (Lynn) Richard Cool and Beatrice (Betty) Alberta Gills on August 13, 1942.

Larry graduated from Gila Bend High School and was recognized as All-American as a star athlete for the Gila Monsters football team. Larry joined the United States Navy and served at sea aboard the USS Ranger during the Vietnam War in 1961. Larry worked as a mechanic and on a tugboat crew in Washington State, later he was a lumberjack. As a carpenter and inventor he converted a Frito-Lay van into one of the first recreational vehicles in Cascadia.

Larry enjoyed music especially playing guitar and harmonica. You could find him most evenings telling stories and jokes, fireside with family and friends. He was one of the most determined pranksters that ever lived.

The following song inspired by Larry's words has been written by Elizabeth Cool:
Don't Cry When I Die
When I die, Oh don't you cry
Oh me, Oh my, I better not see you cry
Throw me a party and don't shed a tear Because I'm still near
So, Oh me, Oh my, The time has come
My spirit is right here, So let's have a beer
Oh me, Oh my, Just please don't you cry

Larry married Carolyn Rae Mellecker in Malibu, California in 1966. He is survived by three daughters, Candie Catherine Cool, Cherie Lynette Cool-Rudd, and Elizabeth Ann Cool. Larry's grandchildren are Rebecca Lynn Rhodes, Jon Vincent Rhodes Kaiser, Thomas James Cikos Rhodes, Victoria Lynn Durian and Jade Monique Rudd. Larry is also survived by two great-grandchildren, Tucker Dale Rhodes and Alexis May Trevizo.

A celebration of life party will be held at the American Legion in Coralville, Iowa on Saturday, July 29, 2017 from 5 to 9 PM. All are welcome.
