Mike “Buddah” Montgomery, 66, of Iowa City, died Saturday, June 17, 2017 at University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics.

Visitation will be Wednesday from 3:00 to 6:00 pm at Lensing Funeral Service in Iowa City. A Celebration of Buddha’s life will begin at 6:00 pm. Private burial will be at a later date in St. Joseph Cemetery in Iowa City. Instead of flowers & plants, memorials may be directed to The Mike “Buddah” Memorial Fund.

Buddah was born December 21, 1950 in Iowa City, the son of James P. “Mike” & Dorothy “Dot” (Spivey) Montgomery. Buddah grew up on the south side of Iowa City. He was the first child of the “gomery” clan. Having the privilege of being one of eight, pushed him to grow up fast, strong and wise.

He continued to push himself through life. He started working at a young age, seven days a week. A 9-5 shift was not enough for him so he picked up side jobs on nights and weekends. He had a very refined work ethic – whether he got paid or not.

Buddah was an intimidating man, yet very caring and very much a smart aleck. He had a great art of telling “long stories” and a skill of slipping his grandkids money. In his younger years he enjoyed camping and fishing at Sugar Bottom. He always enjoyed playing cards, beating Mary in pool and listening to music. The Traveling Wilbury’s and Old Frank were two of his favorite artists.

Above all, Buddah loved and enjoyed his family. The time spent with his grandkids and extended family were cherished by him. Perhaps some of the memories he cherished the most were of his wife Beth Ann – whom he loved with all his heart.

He graduated from Regina High School in 1969 and attended the University of Iowa. On February 5, 1972, Buddha married Beth Ann Kinney in Iowa City. He later earned his journeyman’s certifications as an electrician. He worked for Shay, Ace, Advanced, Merit and Nelson Electric Companies.

Buddah is survived by his wife Beth; sons, Chad Montgomery (Kati) of Cedar Rapids and David Montgomery (Lori) of West Branch; sisters and brothers, Peg Macal of Cedar Rapids, John Montgomery of Houston, Texas, Kate Neuzil (Marvin) of Iowa City, Mary Young (Mike) of Iowa City, Patti Mullnix of Solon and Stacy Scesney (Bill) of Fishkill, New York and 3 grandchildren, Kaylee, Kya and Michael.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Dan.
