Dr. Gretchen Neumann Schreffler, 102, of Iowa City, passed peacefully Saturday, May 6th at Bickford Cottage.
Funeral Services to celebrate Gretchen’s life will be Wednesday, May 10th at 11 AM at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church with Rev. Roger Dykstra and Deacon Pam Larabee - Zierath officiating. Family Committal Services will be at Memory Gardens. Visitation will be Tuesday, May 9th from 3 to 6 PM at Lensing Oak Hill, 210 Holiday Road, Coralville. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, Logan College of Chiropractic or Pilot Club of Iowa City.
Gretchen was born May 1, 1915 in Eldorado, Iowa, the daughter of Henry and Nan Blessin Neumann. She attended Longfellow Elementary School, Central Junior High and was a 1933 graduate of Iowa City City High School. Gretchen received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Iowa. In 1943, she graduated from the Logan College of Chiropractic in St. Louis, where she met her spouse. On June 7, 1942 Gretchen married Robert G. Schreffler.
From 1961 to 1995 Gretchen was in Chiropractic private practice. She served on the Board of the Chiropractic Society of Iowa, the Iowa Chiropractic Association, the State Board of Examiners and the Logan College Board of Trustees. In 2015 Logan College established the Dr. Gretchen Schreffler Scholarship.
Gretchen’s family moved to Iowa City in 1921 when Gretchen was 6. They became members of the First English Lutheran Church, now Gloria Dei Lutheran Church. Gretchen served on the Church council, sang in the Church choir and was involved in educational programs until the time of her death.
Gretchen was civic and community minded. She served on the Coralville Recreation Commission and the Iowa City Planning Commission. Gretchen was a member of the Pilot Club of Iowa City from 1971 to 2013 and had served as president, board member, chaplain and delegate to numerous conventions. In 1996, she was the Pilot Sweetheart. Gretchen had been honored as Distinguished Woman of the Year in 1994 and in 1982 the American Business Woman of the Year. She was in the first class of inductees into the Iowa City City High School Hall of Fame.
Gretchen was a longtime resident of Coralville and Iowa City. At the age of 95 she built a new single family home. In November 2016, she moved to Bickford Cottage.
The family would like to extend their appreciation to the caring staffs at Bickford Cottage, Iowa City Hospice and Mercy Iowa City.
Survivors include her two daughters, Nancy (Fred) Moore of Plymouth, MN and Lynda (Steve) Hayslett of Iowa City; four grandchildren, Bob (Janis) Moore, Dave (Tammy) Moore, Tracy (Scott) Colestock, and Pete (Kacie) Ungaro; three step grandchildren, Ryan (Angela) Hayslett, Bekka (Travis) Schaapveld, and Jessie (Scott) Van Oss; twelve great grandchildren and four step great-grandchildren.
Gretchen was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and three brothers.
