Michael Withington Bresnahan, age 77, of Iowa City, Iowa passed away April 30, 2017 at his home after a lengthy illness. A celebration of life will be held Tuesday, May 9, at 2:00 p.m. at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, 605 Kirkwood Avenue, Iowa City, Iowa.

Michael was born February 9, 1940 in Iowa City, Iowa to George T. and Dorothy E. Bresnahan.

He graduated from Iowa City High School in 1958. In 1962, he graduated from The University of Iowa with a Bachelor of Business Administration Degree, and was in the Master of Business Program. He worked for the Western Electric Company in Chicago, Illinois until 1970 when he moved back to Iowa City, Iowa, and became Director of Medical Records at The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (UIHC). In 1985, he became the Administrator in the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at UIHC. After fourteen years, he retired from the Ophthalmology Department as Assistant to the Chairman in 1999.

During his career in Iowa City, Michael was involved in numerous conservation activities, some involving property acquired jointly by businessmen in Johnson County. He was active in Ducks Unlimited and Pheasants Forever projects, and was past Exalted Ruler of BPOE 590. Michael was an avid hunter and fisherman at various locations in the West, Alaska, Canada and around Lake Michigan.

Upon retiring, Michael acquired a farm in Van Buren County, and spent 16 years upgrading the property, cultivating stands of hardwood trees, building furniture and collecting Indian artifacts. Michael and Bernis, to whom he was united in marriage, spent pleasant days on the farm with many friends in the Van Buren County area.

Michael is survived by his wife, Bernis G. Stagg; her daughter Shelly Given and granddaughter Elli Given of North Liberty, Iowa; her son Jerry Stagg of Las Vegas, Nevada; a sister, Nancy Senneff of Iowa City, Iowa; a brother-in-law, Laurance Meyer of Downers Grove, Illinois; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Joan Meyer; and, brother-in-law, Thomas Senneff.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Iowa City Hospice, or to the Michael W. Bresnahan Memorial Fund which will be distributed among organizations that Michael supported.
