Ann Brawner, 84, died peacefully at Mercy Hospital on Saturday, April 15th surrounded by her children. Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 am, Wednesday, April 19, 2017 at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, Iowa City. Visitation will be Tuesday from 5 to 7 pm at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to EWALU Lutheran Church Camp, 37776 Alpha Avenue, Strawberry Point, Iowa 52706 or the Iowa City Animal Care and Adoption Center.

H. Ann Hollingshead was born January 21, 1933, the daughter of Bert and Edna Hollingshead. As a child, Ann developed a love for animals and would accompany her father on veterinarian calls. Ann was a graduate of Albia (IA) High School and The University of Iowa School of Nursing. While a student at both institutions, she excelled and lettered in voice and choir. She married Gene Brawner on November 20, 1954.

Gene and Ann lived in Yokohama, Japan, Honolulu, Hawaii, and Iowa City. Ann was a registered nurse who worked as both a civilian nurse for the armed forces in Japan and Hawaii and as an RN at The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. She was a member of Sweet Adelines through which she could continue her love of singing. Ann was devoted to her husband and enjoyed traveling with him. Spending time with Gene, her children, and grandchildren was vital to her.

Ann is survived by her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren: Mike (Jackie) Brawner of Mt. Pleasant and their children Rachel (Joe) Johnson and Jack, and Erik; Marta (Robert) Zahs of Iowa City and their children Callie (Adam) Shalla, Nicholas Gruwell, Shane (Jackie) Zahs and Trenen and Jordan, and Kathryn Zahs; Lisa (Jason) Owen and their children Lexi, Jaden, Addie, and Lily. She is also survived by her brother, Caryl, and his wife of Webster City. Ann was preceded in death by her husband, Gene, her parents and her brothers, Cloyd and John.
