Robert Dean Hartzler was born Oct. 10, 1943, in Wellman, Iowa, the son of Jesse and Ada (Schrock) Hartzler. He graduated from Mid-Prairie High School, Northwest Missouri State University, Truman State University and Drake University, with a Doctorate in Education.

On August 20, 1966, he was united in marriage to Charlene Bush in Wellman, Iowa. They were blessed with fifty years of marriage and two wonderful children.

Bob was a teacher and coach in Muscatine and Maquoketa. In 1978 he became an administrator in Ankeny, serving as Assistant Superintendent of Schools from 1987-2004. During his professional career, he was honored as Teacher of the Year at Muscatine High twice, Central Office Administrator of the Year for Iowa; Outstanding Drake Alumna; and a graduate of Leadership Iowa. Throughout his successful career, Bob earned the respect and admiration of his peers. Most of all, Bob was devoted to his family.

A caring man, Bob made an impact on the lives of so many, even until his death. He was a man of integrity, leadership and great character. Bob had a great sense of humor, and was known for his personable smile and interest in others. He was a loyal Iowa Hawkeye fan. His favorite hobbies were performance cars, travel, golf and rock and roll.

Bob died at the Bird House hospice on April 8, 2017, at 73 years. Bob is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife Char; daughter Leah (Mike) Greif and their sons, Benjamin and William of Cedar Rapids; son, Ryan Hartzler of Arvada, CO; brothers Victor (Marlene); brother Dale (Meg); and sister Orpha (Dick) Yoder; sister-in-law Elinor (Orval) Hartzler; and many nieces, nephews and great friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Maurice and Orval, and sister LaVerne Wolfer.

The family is grateful for the physicians and staff of the Holden Cancer Center; Dr. Kusner and staff; Carol Tippe and staff of the Bird House Hospice for their compassionate care.

Family will greet friends at Lensing’s Oak Hill, 210 Holiday Road, Coralville on Saturday, April 22, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. with a Celebration of Life service at 12:30 p.m.

Ever the educator, Bob requested his body be donated to the University of Iowa College of Medicine Deeded Body Program.
