14 May 1931 - The West Branch Times

John U. Lumpa, son of John and Catherine Lumpa, was born at Newport, Iowa, on October 2, 1858. He was in this 73rd year at the time of his death, which occurred at his home northwest of Oasis, on Tuesday, May 5th, at 11:00 p.m.

One brother, Adam, and one sister, Louisa, are all of his own family who survive him. Henry Lumpa died about 18 months ago.

John was married to Dora Elizabeth Hahn of Graham township, March 29, 1883. This good wife survives the husband, and mourns him sincerely, with their six children. All the near relatives live in this vicinity.

Mr. and Mrs. Lumpa settled on the present farm immediately after their marriage, and for these 48 years have worked hard to make the farm one of the best in the neighborhood. The children are William, Mrs. Hattie Petersen, Mrs. Cora Lovetinsky, Fred, Mrs. Edna Vikel and at home, John. Fourteen grandchildren are now living, two having died earlier.

For about six weeks Mr. Lumpa had been sick, but it was hard for him to realize that his active life about the farm had to go on without him, but his heart was not as strong as his ambition, and late on the evening of Tuesday, the body once so vigorous and strong, lay quiet in its last long sleep.

Funeral services were held from the home northwest of Oasis on Friday, May 8th, at 2:30 p.m. The Rev. H. D. Green, pastor of the Methodist church of West Branch, had charge of the services, and burial was made in the Oakland cemetery at Iowa City.
