Matthew P. “Matt” Walker, 47, of North Liberty, chose to end his life Tuesday evening, March 7, 2017.

His family will greet friends Saturday from noon until 4:00 pm at St. Mary’s Auditorium in Oxford. A Celebration of Matt’s Life will begin at 4:00 pm.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to an educational fund which will be established to benefit Mitchell & Macie Walker.

Matt was born April 6, 1969 in Iowa City, the son of Orville and Betty (Groff) Walker. He grew up in both Iowa City and North Liberty and graduated from Clear Creek Amana High School. Matt married his high school sweetheart, Mona Hruby on November 21, 1987 in Oxford. With Matt enlisting in the US Army, the couple soon moved with the Army to Germany and later to Virginia, where Matt served at the White House during the presidencies of H. W. Bush and Bill Clinton.

Returning to the Iowa City area, he worked in construction for over twenty years, first for Knutson Construction – and most recently for McComas-Lacina Construction.

The outdoors was a magnet for Matt. He was drawn to trapping, hunting, fishing, camping and drift boat fishing. In recent years, he very much enjoyed fly fishing in Baldwin, Michigan.

Matt is survived by his wife Mona; his children, Mitchell Walker and Macie Walker, both of North Liberty; his mother, Betty Walker of Wisconsin; brothers and sisters, Bruce Walker (Jackie) of Arizona, Jim Walker (Dorian) of Iowa City and David Walker (Josie) of North Liberty; Bee Johanns (Regis) of Utah, Julie Hutchinson (Gary) of Wisconsin, Lora King (Joe) of Missouri, Sara Woody (Phillip) of Minnesota and Diane Harrington of North Liberty; Mona’s parents, Ray Hruby (Shirley) of Oxford; brothers and sisters in law, Luke Hruby (Susan) of Oxford and their children, Emma and Claire; Moria Lewis (Greg) of Oxford and their children, Danielle, Micheal and Mark; Joy Sweeney (PJ) of Tiffin and their children, Alexa, Elizabeth and Melissa; Jill Downes (Tim Kovacevich) of Ankeny and Jill’s children, Grace and Greta Downes and Jessica Uhlmann (Brandt) of Williamsburg and their children, Jacob, Wyatt and Ethan.

Matt was preceded in death by his father.
