Ruth Ann Swaner, 95, died peacefully Sunday, February 5th.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 AM, Thursday, February 9th at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Father Steven Witt officiating.

Visitation will be Thursday from 9 AM to 10 AM at the Church.

Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Mercy Hospital Foundation, Iowa Public Television or to Domestic Violence Prevention Program.

Ruth was born November 6, 1921 in Iowa City, the daughter of Carl and Ruth Cummings Strub. She was a 1939 graduate of City High School and received her degree from The University of Iowa College of Business. On November 3, 1943 Ruth married James R. Swaner.

Most important to Ruth were her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Ruth was a grand master duplicate bridge player, she played until the last ten days of her life. She was member of the Mercy Hospital Guild, where she volunteered for over 35 years. She enjoyed traveling, loved antiques, wildlife and land preservation trusts. Ruth was an avid Chicago Cubs and Hawkeye fan. She was very knowledgeable and loved baseball

Ruth is survived by James R. Swaner and their children, John Swaner (Gregory Whiting) of Portland, OR, Jim C. (Dr. Ann) Swaner of Miami Shores, FL, Janey (Dan) Wall of Cedar Rapids and Susan (Dee) Chiles of Iowa City; seven grandchildren, Thomas Swaner, Mark Swaner, Tyler (Kristine) Brown, Megan (Kai) McPhee, Ryan (Kaye) Chiles, Brett Chiles (Olivia Day) and Chad (Courtney) Chiles; five great grandchildren and one expectant great grandson; her brother, Carl “Bud” Strub of Iowa City; numerous nieces and nephews.

Ruth was preceded in death by her parents; two siblings, Jean Fitzgibbons and Bobbie Norgaard.

The family would like to extend their appreciation to Georgia Welch and Alicia Akers for their special love, care and friendship.
