Mary “Bobbie” Catherine (Quinlan) Shay
Devoted Wife and Loving Mother

Bobbie Shay, 91, went to her eternal rest Monday, January 30, 2017 at her home in Iowa City.

A Funeral Mass will begin at 10:00 AM Friday, February 3, 2017 at St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Coralville. Visitation will be Thursday, February 2 from 3:00 – 8:00 PM at Lensing Funeral Service, 605 Kirkwood Avenue in Iowa City. A Rosary will precede the visitation Thursday at 2:30PM. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery at a later date.

Bobbie was born September 13, 1925 in Delmar, IA to Mary Katherine (Welsh) and Clement Francis Quinlan. Bobbie graduated from Mt. Saint Clare High School in 1942 and attended Commercial College of Mt. Saint Clare. In 1946 Bobbie met the love of her life, William “Bill” Donald Shay, whom she married on February 7, 1948 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Clinton, IA. As a devoted child of God, Bobbie embraced her role as a faithful wife and loving mother, always putting those she loved before herself. She shared her light and love for serving others over the years as an employee of Mercy Hospital of Iowa City, Iowa City Community School District (Central Junior High School), and The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

Bobbie was a loving servant at heart. She was kind and soft-spoken, and always had time for others, especially children. Following retirement, Bill and Bobbie traveled often, all the time making sure she was able to see her grandchildren. Her warmth and love was expressed in the many hand crochet hats she made for the new born babies at Mercy Hospital of Iowa City. She did not have to know you to want to help you, her heart alway lead her to love others unconditionally. She knew how to make the room erupt into laughter with a witty comment at the unexpected moment. She is dearly missed by her loved ones, who celebrate the fact that she is at peace with her creator.

Bobbie is survived by her husband, Bill; her children Michael Shay (Linda), Kevin Shay (Kristin), Daniel Shay (Terri), Edwin Shay, Richard Shay, Beth Shay, Sheila Shay, Patrick Shay (Julie), Maureen Adams and Colleen Shay (Jeni); thirtyfour grandchildren; thirtyseven great-grandchildren; sister-in-laws Ruth Quinlan and Dorothy Shay; along with numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers Richard, Clement, and William Quinlan; one grandchild; and three great-grandchildren.

The family would like to extend their sincere appreciation to the staff of Iowa City Hospice and the staff of Legacy Point. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Iowa City Hospice or Camp Courageous.

May the road rise up to meet you.
May the wind always be at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
and rains fall soft upon your fields.
And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of His hand.
