Verlyn V. Siglin, 85, of Coralville, passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 28, 2017 at Lantern Park Specialty Care Center. Born August 3, 1931 in Fort Dodge IA to Nord and Edith (Vaux) Siglin, Verlyn grew up in Mason City before moving on to the University of Iowa to study education and art. After graduating in 1953, Verlyn took a job teaching art at Madison elementary school in Davenport. In Davenport he met and married Marilyn Swanson on August 1, 1954. The couple raised two sons, Douglas and Stephen. They later divorced.

While teaching, Verlyn earned a Masters degree in Educational Administration at UI and then began a career as a principal in the Davenport school district that lasted until his retirement in 1993. He served as principal at Jefferson, Eisenhower, Lincoln, and Wilson schools. He was especially proud of the F.I.N.E award that he and his Wilson staff received from the Iowa Governor for their exceptional work.

Verlyn was an avid hunter and golfer and he enjoyed fast cars, sharp clothes, and a good game of poker. He loved to surround himself with beautiful art and interesting objects and he appreciated good music, food and drink. He had a special fondness for anything cowboy and he loved spending time in the western United States.

Verlyn was especially proud of his grandchildren, Allison Siglin of West Chester PA, Jonathan (Jack) Siglin of College Park MD and Katherine (Kara) Siglin of College Park MD. Other survivors include Doug (Kris) Siglin of Highland, MD and Steve (Belinda) Siglin of Iowa City.

Verlyn was preceded in death by his parents and by his wife Diane Case-Siglin.

Per Verlyn's request, his body has been donated to the University of Iowa Deeded Body Program. A family service is planned at a later date.

The family would like to thank Drs Tom Novak, Daniel Leary, John Bennett, and Scott Eberly, and the staffs at Legacy Ridge, Griswold Home Care, Mercy hospital, and Care Initiatives. Memorials may be directed to a charity of the donor’s choice.
