Perry J. Courtney, 83, longtime Iowa City resident, died Sunday, January 22, 2017, at Briarwood Health Care Center in Iowa City.

The family will greet friends Thursday from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service in Iowa City. A Celebration of Perry’s Life will begin at 1:00 pm Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Iowa City. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Briarwood Health Care Center.

Born September 22, 1933 in Greentop, Missouri, Perry grew up in Greentop. His father died at an early age, so Perry and his brother left school to work to help support their family. He later enlisted in the United States Navy as a boatswain’s mate. Perry married Elizabeth “Betty” Lantz on April 19, 1958 in Iowa City.

Upon leaving the military, Perry went to work for Asplundh Tree Service for 30 years, retiring as a foreman. After leaving Asplundh, Perry worked at the Iowa City VA Hospital until his 2nd retirement.

He very much enjoyed spending time with family, hunting and fishing. Perry was a loyal attendee of the Hy-Vee Coffee Clubs in Iowa City.

Survivors include his daughters, Barbara Boorman (John) of Blackbird, Delaware and Fran Calvert (Ron) of Iowa City, grandchildren, Ron Calvert Jr. (Leah) and their children Norah and Hailey; Chad Babka (Tara); Jeremy Boorman (Amanda) and their children, Luke and Ian; Michael Boorman and his children, Marley and Hailey; and Alison Mathieu (Josh).

Perry was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Elizabeth “Betty”, two sisters, Christine and Irene and a brother Bill.
