Walter Carl Helm, 95, of Iowa City, passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 12, 2016 at Mercy Hospital, Hospice Unit, Iowa City.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 AM, Wednesday, November 16, 2016 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Iowa City, with Father Jeff Belger officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at church.

Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Iowa City.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Mary’s Catholic Church or Iowa City Hospice.

Walter was born on June 27, 1921 in Iowa City, the son of Carl and Miriam (Conant) Helm. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII from 1944-1946. Walter was united in marriage to Elaine Heitzman on May 27, 1948 at St. Mary’s Church in Riverside, Iowa; she preceded him in death on January 18, 2015. He was a machine operator for Iowa Valley Milling for 35 years, retiring in 1984.

Survivors include his four Children, Barbara (Richard) Schintler, Carol (Jerry) Rogers, Richard (Terry) Helm, and Robert Helm; nine Grandchildren, Rich, Jonathan, and Royce Schintler, Nicole Carlson, Zachary Rogers, Michelle Zirkel, Brittany Franklin, Kyle and Ethan Rogers; and seven Great-Grandchildren, Faith Schintler, Tyler Carlson, Brevin and Bram Zirkel, Luke, Abram and Micah Franklin; Brother, Morris Helm; and Sister-in-Law, Gladys Helm.

He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; three Brothers, Francis, Theodore “Ted”, and Carl Dean Helm; and Sisters-in-law, Clara and Helene Helm.
