Philip “Phil” Marino Rocca Sr, 82, died Friday, September 2nd at Mercy Hospice surrounded by family.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 AM Tuesday, September 6th at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Father Steven Witt officiating.

Visitation will be Monday from 3 to 7 PM at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, Iowa City. The Knights of Columbus will recite a rosary at 6:30 PM followed by a Vigil Service.

Burial with Military Honors will be held at 4:30 Tuesday at St. Joseph Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the Philip Rocca Memorial Fund, Iowa City Hospice or the Iowa City Parkinson’s Support Group.

Phil was born May 28, 1934 in Iowa City, the son of Peter and Mary Pusateri Rocca. He was a 1952 graduate of St. Mary’s High School and had attended the University of Iowa. Phil served in the US Army from 1955-57. On June 1, 1957 Phil married Shirley Ann Leeney at St. Patrick’s Church. They were married for nearly 50 years.

Phil was a letter carrier for the US Postal Service for over 40 years, retiring in 1996. He had a strong work ethic, always working two jobs to better provide for his family.

Phil was a lifelong member of St. Mary’s Church, where he served as an usher and communion distributor. He was a member of Knights of Columbus Council 842 and was past Grand Knight. Phil was past president of Eagle Lodge 695 and had been a Boy Scout and Cub Scout Leader. He enjoyed fishing, traveling, camping, playing cards, especially euchre, and motorcycle riding. He enjoyed an occasional trip to the casino. Phil was an avid Iowa Hawkeye and Chicago Cub fan. Most important to Phil was time spent with family.

The family would like to extend their appreciation to Dr. Larew and Dr. Neiman and all the caregivers at Solon Care Center, Mercy 3 West, Mercy Hospice and Iowa City Hospice.

Survivors include his three sons and eight grandchildren, Andrew (Terri) Rocca of Iowa City and children, Nicholas (Ashley), Joel (Abby), Benjamin; Gerald (Sharri) Rocca of Waseca, MN and children Allison and Tiffany; and Philip Jr. (Paula) Rocca of Iowa City and children, Philip III, Paige and Peter; four great-grandchildren, Brooke, Alexis, A.J. and Blakley; siblings Edward of Muscatine, IA, Mike (Beryl) of Rochester, IA, Jim (Mary Jo) of Ellisville, MO, and Loretta (Jim) Clark of Iowa City; sisters- in-law Trudy Rocca of Rochester, MN and Ellen Rocca of Marion, IA; his special friend Pat Claeys of Iowa City; and numerous extended family.

He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, two sisters, Josephine and Sister Mary Catherine Rocca, two brothers, Joe and John and sister-in-law, Linda.
