Robert J. "Bob” Halvorsen, 68, of Coralville, passed away early Monday morning, August 15, 2016 at home, with his family at his side.
Bob’s family will greet friends Friday from 3:00 to 6:30 pm at Lensing’s Oak Hill, 210 Holiday Road, in Coralville. Instead of flowers and plants, memorials may be directed to The Robert Halvorsen Memorial Fund.
Bob was born May 10, 1948 in Iowa City, to William & JoAnne (Jindrich) Halvorsen. Growing up in Coralville, Bob graduated from University High School in 1967 and entered the US Navy as a machinist – serving for 6 years. Upon leaving the military, Bob worked for Cryovac in Cedar Rapids for several years as a machinist. Later leaving Cryovac, he worked as a self-employed contractor/carpenter up until 6 weeks ago.
In his free time, Bob loved to fish and play golf and enjoyed many years of fishing trips with family. Many late evenings were spent at home in the living room with his dad Bill, crafting his own flys – which were used not only by Bob but shared with others as well. Actually, to be perfectly honest, Bob was an expert fly fisherman and a carpenter on the side!
Bob is survived by his son, Brian (Kim) Halvorsen of Tiffin; his father, Bill Halvorsen of Coralville; a brother, John (Cindy) Halvorsen of Macedonia, SC, sisters, Barb (Mike) Roberts of Tiffin, Judy (Bob) Coates of Maumelle, AR, Joan Barr of Coralville and Polly Riggan of Tiffin; nieces and nephews, John and Cheryl Halvorsen of Macedonia, SC, Sonja and Steve Saturday of St. Stephens, SC, Chad (Lacey) Halvorsen of Macedonia, SC, Stephanie (Jeremy) Spoas of Raleigh, NC, Amy Coates and Anna Coates, both of Maumelle, AR, Linzee Barr (Tonya Stratton) and Ashlee (Ryan) Stigers, all of Homestead , Chelsey Riggan (Craig Kuepker) of North Liberty, Emily (Clint) Fults and Jamie Halvorsen (Dion Young), all of Tiffin; great nieces and nephews, Hannah, Kelsey (Lance), Johnny, Alyssa, Drew, Breanna, Steven, Brittany, Joey, Katie, Jordan, Kirsten and Noah.
Bob was preceded in death by his mother JoAnne and a sister, Jeanette Halvorsen.
