Ruth Frances Zach, 91, of Iowa City and formerly of Davenport, died Saturday, August 13, 2016 at The Bird House/Hospice Home of Johnson County.

Visitation will be held Tuesday from 11:00 – 1:00 PM, at Lensing Funeral Service in Iowa City. A celebration of life will begin at 1:00 PM at the funeral home. Burial will follow at the Czech National Cemetery in Cedar Rapids. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to The Bird House/Hospice Home of Johnson County.

Ruth was born, October 4, 1924, in Plainfield, IA, to Galen and Muriel Mellinger. They later moved to Nashua, IA, where she spent her childhood years. She graduated from Nashua High School and later from Gates Business College, Waterloo IA. In 1942, she worked for Rath Packing Co., and in 1945, at Winterbottom Supply Co. in Waterloo, IA. After marriage, she worked at Diesel Service Co., in Ames, IA.

Ruth married LeRoy Zach on March 21, 1947 and soon began her career as a homemaker. She was active in several organizations throughout her lifetime including, Tri Tea, PEO, and Questers. She enjoyed volunteering her service in her younger years and loved playing bridge no matter where she lived. She was a lifelong member of the Congregational United Church of Christ.

Ruth and her husband Lee enjoyed traveling around the United States and abroad. They spent their retirement years dividing their time between their home in Venice, Fl, and Davenport IA, where they lived for 25 years. Recently she moved to Melrose Meadows, Iowa City, IA, to be closer to family.

Ruth loved to spend time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren when possible. She is survived by two daughters, Susan (Jim) Legg of San Tan Valley and Catherine Zach Shaw of Iowa City, grandchildren, Joe (Julie) Legg of Danville, IL, Anne (Dan) Sullivan of Mesa, AZ, Emma (Stefan) Stobbs of Phoenix, AZ, and Michael Shaw of Minneapolis, MN, and great grandchildren, Lorelei and Milo Sullivan of Mesa, AZ, and soon to born great granddaughter Stobbs, of Phoenix, AZ. Ruth is preceded in death by her husband, LeRoy Zach and her parents, Galen and Muriel Mellinger.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Bird House/Hospice Home of Johnson Co.
