Death Takes Mrs. Mapes

Mrs. E.K. Mapes, Parsons College graduate and a former Fairfield High School teacher, died Wednesday afternoon at Oak Knoll Infirmary at Iowa City. She had been ill about two months.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church in Iowa City of which she was a member. Burial will be in Iowa City.

Mrs. Mapes, 86, the former Laura Hinkhouse, was born June 13, 1887, the daughter of Dr. John F. and Amy Junkin Hinkhouse, and was the eldest and the last of five children.

She graduated from Parsons College with the Class of 1909 and taught English at the Fairfield High School for two years. She was married in 1912 to Erwin K. Mapes.

Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Juan Lopez-Morillas, Providence, R.I.: three grandsons and one granddaughter; also two nieces reared in the Mapes home, Mrs. G.A. Pence, Northfield, Minn., and Mrs. Virgil Kaufman, Long Beach, Calif.

Mrs. Mapes was preceded in death by her husband, one daughter, three brothers and one sister.

She was a member of the PEO Sisterhood for over 50 years and at the time of her death was a resident of the Sarah Porter Beckwith PEO Retirement Home in Mount Pleasant.

Mrs. Mapes was a sister-in-law of Mrs. Fred Hinkhouse, 308 E. Lowe.
