Philip J. Harney, 56, of Iowa City, died Saturday, July 16, 2016 at University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics after a long illness.

A Funeral Mass will begin Wednesday at 10:00 am at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Iowa City. Visitation will be from 3:00 to 8:00 pm Tuesday at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service in Iowa City. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery in Iowa City.

Instead of flowers and plants, the family kindly requests memorials to Genesis Medical Center Rehabilitation Unit (c/o Dr. Conway Chin) or The Newman Singers.

At an early age, Phil loved baseball, playing little league, Babe Ruth, and varsity ball at City High. Upon graduation from City High School in 1978 he began working for the U of I as a Pipefitter for the next 31+ years. Phil was united in marriage with Soni Hansen on October 1, 1983 and they were blessed with two sons, Brock (in 1985) and Drew (in 1989).

Phil, who many of his friends knew as "Harnolds", proudly drove his yellow and white Ford pick up truck which he bought brand new in 1978 and he drove it until the floorboards rusted through.
He was an avid gardener (big vegetable garden, known for his homemade salsa, sauces, homemade sauerkraut and other family recipes), loved to cook and bake, and took pride in his beautiful rose garden as well as feeding the backyard birds.

Phil was an avid deer hunter and fisherman. He coached both boys' little league baseball teams with his brother-in-law, Mike Hansen. He very much enjoyed family vacations to Lake St. Germaine, Wisconsin and to Florida.

After Brock and Drew graduated from high school, Phil became a certified umpire for Babe Ruth in Iowa City where he returned to his love of the sport of baseball and working with kids.

There was never an empty nest at the Harney house as his faithful companions, Champ and Cooper were always close by his side.

Phil is survived by his wife Soni, his mother, Marguerite of Iowa City; sons, Brock Harney (Heather) of La Crosse, Wisconsin and Drew Harney (Sarah Sebeny) of North Liberty; brothers and sisters, Vicki Phillips (Mike) of Plainview, Texas, Mike Harney (Marsha) of Iowa City, Joyce Carroll (Steve) of Iowa City, Janet Harney (Edward Broyles) of Alexandria, Virginia and Larry Harney of Iowa City; two faithful companions, Champ and Cooper and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.
