Eleanor Marie Behlke, 86, of Iowa City died Wednesday July 13, 2016 at The Woodlands, in the Meth-Wick Community of Cedar Rapids, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
Per her wishes, no service is planned – In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Alzheimer’s Association.
Eleanor was born September 17, 1929 in Maynard, Iowa, the daughter of Aaron and Mathilda Lenz Schlegel. She was a graduate of Maynard High School and the Milwaukee Hospital School of Nursing. On June 19, 1953 Eleanor married Dr. Frank Behlke. Eleanor and Frank at various times lived in Milwaukee, Tucson, Dallas, El Paso, and, most recently, Iowa City. Eleanor was a registered nurse. She had been employed at the Milwaukee Hospital, the Milwaukee Blood Center, and at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City.
Survivors include her two children, Mark Behlke of Iowa City and Martha (George) Richards of Naples, FL; three grandchildren, Olivia, George and Lauren; her brother, Gerald Schlegel of Arvada, CO; her sister Arlene Riasanovsky of Berkeley, CA; and her sister-in-law Jeanne Schlegel of Maynard, IA.
Eleanor was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in 1999, infant children Marsha and Christopher, her brother Aaron, her brother-in-law Nicholas, her sister-in-law Lois Jean and daughter-in-law Janet.
The family would like to express their gratitude for the excellent care and compassion provided by her caregivers at the Meth-Wick Woodlands facility.
