Services at Solon For Jasper R. Pennington, Lost Legs in Europe

Funeral services for Jasper R. Pennington, 41, a former Solon resident, were held Jan. 26 at Solon, with burial at Morse cemetery near Solon. The Solon American Legion post conducted military services.

Pennington, who lost both legs as a member of the special service forces at Anzio beachhead in Italy, took his life at his home in Green Valley, Calif. Before that he had fired 6 shots from a 45 caliber pistol at his wife, Pamela. She was wounded in the right arm.

He saw military service in the army from 1942 to 1945 and was in both the Pacific and European theaters of operation. He received the bronze star for valor in action.

Mr. Pennington was born near Solon Aug. 6, 1923, the son of Levi and Anna Pennington and lived in the Solon-Iowa City area until moving to California in 1956.

He was employed by the veterans administration in Iowa City after his discharge in 1945 and was a member of the Iowa City American Legion post.

He was a member of the reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints.

Surviving are his wife, his parents, now living at Mechanicsville; 3 sisters, Mrs. Rea Hughes and Mrs. Kathryn Schultz, Long Beach, Calif., and Mrs. Edward Smith, Burlington; and 7 brothers, Robert, Virgil and Homer, all of Cedar Rapids, Levi Jr., Fairfax, Joseph of Viola, Oliver of North Liberty and James, Long Beach, Calif.
