John Opio, 97, of Iowa City, passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 25, 2016 at The Hospice House of Johnson County. Visitation will be from 11-1 pm on Wednesday, June 29 at Lensing’s Oak Hill, 210 Holiday Road in Coralville, with a funeral service to follow at 1 pm. Father Gary Beckman will officiate. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The John Opio Memorial Fund with donations to be directed, by his family, to The Hospice House of Johnson County, The American Cancer Society, Mercy Hospice or to Iowa City Hospice.

John was born on February 8, 1919 in Juncos, Puerto Rico, the son of Esteban and Argelia (Negron) Opio. He grew up in Juncos until the age of 19, at which time he moved to New York with his family. John spent most of his adult life in New York, working various factory jobs until retiring early in 1973. In 2004, John moved to Iowa City to be closer to his daughter Judith.

John attended St. Paul the Apostle Church in Manhattan, NY, attended and volunteered at Church of the Holy Family in Bronx, NY, and also enjoyed volunteering at the senior center with his fellow church members. He also enjoyed dancing, socializing, and enjoying a good glass of brandy each evening. He will be dearly missed.

Survivors include his daughter Judith “Judy” Opio-Ojeda (Samuel) of Iowa City, brothers: Jose Opio and Esteban Opio, Jr both of Puerto Rico; a sister Maria Opio of Puerto Rico, and a granddaughter Melissa Delgado of Iowa City.

John was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters: Luz Gonzalez and Rose Opio, and a granddaughter Michelle Gonzalez.
