Betty Winnifred (Tuttle) Singer (nee Johnson) a resident of Oaknoll in Iowa City passed away peacefully in her sleep June 3, 2016. She was preceded in death by her parents, Dr. Andrew Johnson, D.D.S. and Jean “Winnie” Bunn; and spouses John W. Tuttle and Frank “Bud” Singer.

She is survived by her son, Wayne Tuttle (Anna Lee Hope) of Iowa City; step-son Mike Singer (Laura); and former daughter-in-law, Amy Baum, of St. Louis; her cherished friend and companion of recent years, John Nesbitt of Iowa City; and many wonderful friends.

Betty was born in Norway, Michigan on February 21, 1926. Because of her birthday, she always liked to joke that she was “a day older than George Washington.” She grew up in Chicago and Palos Heights, Illinois. After graduating from Blue Island High School, she attended the University of Illinois. At various times, she was also a resident of Palos Park and Palos Hills, Illinois; Manitowish Waters, Wisconsin; Sun City, Arizona; and Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Betty enthusiastically embraced life and was able to live it on her own terms almost to the end. Throughout her life, she was active in numerous social groups, service organizations, and church committees as a member and frequent volunteer. At the time of her passing, she was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Iowa City. Normally a woman of great common sense, she also once mystified all who knew her by risking life, limb, and sanity to voluntarily serve a stint as a Cub Scout den mother. She also enjoyed traveling, visiting almost every part of the U.S. and numerous other countries. Her sense of humor and concern and compassion for others will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

No funeral service will be held, because she donated her body to the University of Iowa Medical School. An informal memorial and celebration of her life will be held July 11, 2016 at Oaknoll Retirement Residence. Please call 351-1720 for further details after the first of July.

In lieu of flowers, donations in her name may be made to The Salvation Army of Iowa City, the Iowa City Animal Care and Adoption Center, or the Oaknoll Foundation.
